Exciting News About The Newly Remastered Bill Sackter DVD

Hi Everyone,

While the main purpose of this Kickstarter campaign is to get “A Friend Indeed” on PBS stations around the country, I also have some great news about the Newly Remastered Deluxe Edition DVD of “A Friend Indeed - The Bill Sackter Story” that will be made possible if we reach the funding goal by this Sunday at 10 p.m.
DELUXE EDITION DVD WILL INCLUDE PUBLIC PERFORMANCE RIGHTS
This new version of the DVD will include Public Performance Rights, so if you pledge $35 or more you will be the first to receive the new DVD, and not only will you be able to enjoy "A Friend Indeed" at home, but you can also choose to host your own free public screening events or use the documentary in a classroom setting! I've decided to eliminated the previous "Home Use Only" restriction to allow individuals, organizations, and teachers the ability to share the DVD and all of the extras with audiences of any size (as long as your events are for free admission).
NOW IN PURE WIDESCREEN
Originally the DVD was in a “letterboxed” version, but with the proliferation of widescreen TVs and computer monitors, I felt that this would be a good time to change it to a pure widescreen version that will properly fit our most common viewing devices. Now you won’t have to “scale” the picture to eliminate the black bars on top and bottom. It will just work and look great!
OVER TWO HOURS OF EXTRAS
There are over two hours of extras on the Deluxe Edition DVD, from scenes that were cut from the documentary to short vignettes about a variety of topics that will greatly enhance your viewing experience.
Here’s a listing of what is included on the Deluxe Edition DVD:
  • The Full Award-Winning 90 minute Theatrical Version of "A Friend Indeed"

  • An Insightful Director’s Commentary Track

  • Lots of Additional Footage of Bill & Friends

  • New Interviews, Deleted Scenes, & Audio recordings
  •
The World Premiere Event at Hancher Auditorium

  • Behind the Scenes Orchestra Recording in Seattle

  • Theatrical Trailer, Biographical Information

...and more
YOUR NAME WILL BE ON THE DVD
If you pledge $35 or more (even if you select “No Reward”), your name will appear in a special Kickstarter “Thank You” section in the extras on the DVD, so you can show others that you were part of the effort to greatly expand the audience for “A Friend Indeed”.
SIGNED BY THE FILMMAKER
I will be signing your individual copy of the DVD. I am very thankful for your willingness to make a pledge to help spread the inspirational story of Bill Sackter to many appreciative viewers around the country!
Of course, all of this will only happen if we reach the funding goal of $15,000 by this Sunday February 23 at 10 p.m. Central, so once you've made your pledge be sure to invite a friend or two to join us, or if you have the means consider adjusting your pledge to help the effort. To make a pledge, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/lane-wyrick/a-friend-indeed-the-bill-sackter-story-tv-broadcas
Thanks again for your support - I will have more updates coming soon!
All the best,

Television Debut of "A Friend Indeed - The Bill Sackter Story"

"A Friend Indeed - The Bill Sackter Story", an inspiring documentary about famous Iowan Bill Sackter will have its broadcast debut on Iowa Public Television. Airing Tuesday June 11 at 8 pm and Friday June 14 at 9 p.m., "A Friend Indeed - The Bill Sackter Story" will be seen for the first time in the new 60 minute television version on the main Iowa Public Television channel.

Voted the #1 Audience Favorite in 5 consecutive film festivals, "A Friend Indeed - The Bill Sackter Story" explores the unlikely real-life friendship between Bill Sackter (who was abandoned in an institution for 44 years for mild mental retardation), and Barry Morrow (a young idealistic college student who became Bill's legal guardian to keep Bill out of the institution), and how their relationship and Bill's unique embrace of life allowed Bill to become an internationally known hero for people with disabilities.

Many Iowans remember the made-for-tv drama "Bill" (1981) starring Mickey Rooney and Dennis Quaid that portrayed the events in Bill and Barry's life. This new engaging documentary "A Friend Indeed" explores the real Bill Sackter through actual film/video footage and photographs of Bill himself and interviews with those closest to him, told in a very entertaining and engaging way. It is an entirely new experience that has been praised for its faithful portrayal of the real Bill by those closest to him.

This June marks 30 years since Bill's passing, and his impact continues to resonate especially in Iowa City where he became famous as the proprietor of Wild Bill's Coffee Shop on the University of Iowa campus, with the help of Barry Morrow, Tom Walz and many other people in the community.

Filmmaker Lane Wyrick spent 7 years researching, interviewing and digging through a "treasure trove" of archival footage to bring the documentary to the big screen. "A Friend Indeed - The Bill Sackter Story" had the debut of the theatrical 90 minute version at Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City to a crowd of nearly 1200 in June of 2008. Since then it has been screened around the nation, won numerous awards, and has developed loyal fan base, and recently the theatrical version of "A Friend Indeed" was released on a special edition DVD on Amazon.com.

Wyrick wanted to make sure that the new 60 minute television version of the documentary retained the same impact of the original 90 minute documentary while fitting into television broadcast specifications. "Editing out nearly a third of the documentary while retaining the same level of inspiration in the documentary was a difficult challenge, but I am very happy with the results. Being on television will definitely increase the audience and spread the impact of the documentary, and the DVD is also available for viewers that enjoy the story and want to enhance their experience with the full length documentary and lots of extra footage as well."

The official website, http://www.BillSackter.com/, includes in-depth background information, the video trailer, photos, information about the DVD, and in-depth coverage of this amazing real life story that changed the way our society views people with disabilities.

Iowa City Mayor Hayek declares April 13 Bill Sackter Day

Main Page Content

Iowa City Mayor Matt Hayek has proclaimed April 13 as Bill Sackter Day. The proclamation coincides with a week of special events to mark the 100th birthday of Bill Sackter, April 8-13.
Sackter, a native of Minnesota, was a middle-aged man with a disability who spent nearly half a century in the old Faribault State Hospital. In the early 1970s, he came to Iowa City with Barry and Bev Morrow, a couple he had met in Minneapolis. Barry Morrow had been offered a job at the University of Iowa and Sackter ended up coming along.
Wild Bill's Coffeeshop, 321 North Hall on the UI campus, began as an employment opportunity for Sackter. Later, it became a symbol of "abilities awareness" around Iowa and beyond. The coffee shop thrived and it continues today in the same location in North Hall on the university campus. Staffed by individuals with disabilities, the coffee shop is a service learning project of the UI School of Social Work in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
The proclamation was signed and awarded at the Tuesday, April 9 City Council meeting and can be viewed at now.uiowa.edu/files/now.uiowa.edu/bill_sackter_day.pdf

Inspiring Documentary Returns to Des Moines

“A Friend Indeed - The Bill Sackter Story" Returns For Full Week To Fleur Cinema – Des Moines, Iowa

After a very successful recent screening, the inspiring feature-length documentary “A Friend Indeed – The Bill Sackter Story” is returning to The Fleur Cinema & Café for a full week long theatrical run starting this Friday October 30 through November 5.

Winner of the #1 Audience Favorite Award at five film festivals in a row, “A Friend Indeed” has been surprising and delighting viewers with its powerful story of human compassion and incredible range of heartfelt emotion.

The documentary tells the true story of Bill Sackter who was institutionalized for over four decades for mild mental retardation, and his friendship with Barry Morrow (Academy Award Winning Screenwriter for “Rain Man”) who in real life as a young college student took the unprecedented step of becoming Bill’s legal guardian to keep Bill from being sent back to the institution.

Their friendship, Bill’s positive outlook on life and his eventual rise to international fame was chronicled in the highly successful made-for-tv movie “Bill” (1981) starring Mickey Rooney and Dennis Quaid, and Morrow’s screenplay for the production also won him an Emmy Award.

But Barry Morrow’s original intention of creating a real life documentary about Bill Sackter (using the hours of film and video footage and hundreds of photographs he captured of Bill during his life) would have to wait for over two decades until Barry met Iowa filmmaker Lane Wyrick and entrusted him to complete this project that was so dear to his heart.

Wyrick spent the next 8 years editing the archival footage along with filming new interviews of Barry Morrow and many others who were close to Bill. He also closely collaborated with Hollywood-trained composer Peter Bloesch who created a very rich and emotional full orchestral music score for the production.

“A Friend Indeed – The Bill Sackter Story” has been praised for retaining its documentary authenticity while having an entertaining quality more akin to a Hollywood movie. Wyrick’s groundbreaking hybrid style is very unique, and the film is filled with lots of humor and is ultimately very inspiring, but a box of Kleenex is also highly recommended!

Don’t miss your chance to see firsthand why “A Friend Indeed – The Bill Sackter Story” is becoming the grassroots hit for moviegoers looking for a very positive, inspirational experience that will touch their hearts, and that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

Even if you have never heard of Bill Sackter, by the end of this film you will know and care for him like a close friend!

"A Friend Indeed" to screen at City High School This Thursday

Winner of the #1 Audience Favorite Award at five film festivals in a row, an inspiring new documentary will have a special screening at City High School's Opstad Auditorium on Thursday October 22 at 7 p.m. "A Friend Indeed - The Bill Sackter Story" was created by award-winning filmmaker Lane Wyrick (a 1985 City High Grad). He will introduce the screening and host a Q&A and Filmmaker Presentation afterwards.

"A Friend Indeed" is an amazing and entertaining real-life documentary about people and events that happened right here in Iowa City!!! Tickets to the event are just $8 and are available at the door.

This special screening is sponsored by City High's Drama Department who will benefit from every ticket sold.

If you are on Facebook, please let us know if you're coming and help by inviting all your Facebook friends by going here: http://www.facebook.com/BillSackter#/event.php?eid=150721442809&index=1

The Background:

In 1981, actor Mickey Rooney portrayed Bill Sackter's life in the highly successful television drama "Bill", which depicted Bill's unique relationship with young college student Barry Morrow (played by Dennis Quaid). Their friendship developed shortly after Bill's release from Faribault Institution in Minnesota where he had spent 44 years of his life for mild mental retardation. Barry's compassion for Bill and deep concern for his situation led him to taking the unprecedented step of becoming Bill's legal guardian to keep Bill from being sent back to the institution.

This new documentary "A Friend Indeed - The Bill Sackter Story" gives viewers the opportunity to know the real Bill Sackter, Barry Morrow and many others who were close to Bill, in an entertaining production full of heart and emotion. The 90-minute feature length production uses actual film and video footage and photos of Bill (captured in the 1970's and 80's by Barry Morrow and others), along with interviews with the people closest to Bill, filmed more recently by Wyrick, who also edited the production.

During the final years of Bill's life, his positive attitude, passion for the harmonica, and enthusiastic embrace of everyone he met began to get Bill noticed. As proprietor of "Wild Bill's Coffee Shop" on the University of Iowa campus in Iowa City, Bill's striking personality led to his rise as a local "celebrity", and eventually to his becoming a national leader in a movement that helped normalize peoples' reactions to people with disabilities. He was honored with many awards and was even invited as a guest at the White House, all the while retaining his humble and caring personality and love for all people, especially children.

A Groundbreaking Documentary:

"A Friend Indeed" is filled with lots of emotion, evoking laughter, tears, and ultimately leaving audiences with a feeling of real inspiration. And it shows how a little care and attention can truly transform someone's life and enrich us all. The emotion of the film is greatly enhanced by the full orchestral music score created by Hollywood-trained composer Peter Bloesch who closely collaborated with Wyrick throughout the production to interweave the rich music score seamlessly into the fabric of the story.

At every screening "A Friend Indeed - The Bill Sackter Story" has been enjoyed by moviegoers that are looking for a very positive, inspirational experience that will touch their hearts.
